Skin and Conjunctiva
Itching and conjunctivitis are common manifestations of end-stage renal disease.- and appear to represent the clinical sequelae of microcrys-tallization of calcium. In addition, PTH itself may cause pruritus. As a consequence of poor nutrition and the defects in platelet function, poor skin texture and bruising are common. In long-standing ESRD patients, there is darkening of the skin, perhaps related to retention of substances that stimulate melanin production.
